It a killer app. Well designed. I like it as a listening platform. But what I think is totally wrong: Spotify pays different monies to different labels. As everyone is under NDA it its impossible to find out what those deals are but the word on the street is that majors receive profits from Spotify’s advertising revenue and indies do not. The end result is that a major artist makes more per play than an indie artist. Spotify doesn’t talk about this but The Guardian sums it up well. That’s it. That’s my complaint: fairness.

The Strugglers »

I got asked to sit in on cello for The Strugglers’s first area show since they relocated to DC from North Carolina. Tonight is our first practice & I’m really excited! I don’t usually get asked to play with alt-country types, so it’s actually a refreshing change of pace - and this guy’s stuff is pure gold. Wonderful melodies and lush instrumentations - I can’t wait to see what his new DC ensemble does with it.

And Comet Ping Pong is awesome. If you’re around on July 2, please join us.

EDIT: This show was CANCELLED, but The Strugglers are looking for another summer show, and hopefully I will sit in on that one as well.

The Pauses: Record-O-Blog: Day 6 »

The beginning of the end. We have 1 more day left of cramming to get all the squares of the big board filled in. It’s starting to look like a pretty one-sided game of Tic-Tac-Toe (or Hollywood Squares for the less analogy crowd). Gordon Withers dropped by last night and knocked out the Whoopie…

I make another appearance in The Pauses’s Record-O-Blog! The session was a lot of fun, and I predict that these kids are gonna be huge. They are making a fine, fine album which you will love. I can’t wait to hear the final product!

Subsequently, the issue to me isn’t filesharing or piracy, exactly, but rather the last 5-7 years’ flood of music that hopes to reach an essentially static population.
